Here's a close-up of the Motorola Spectra radio. The radios
in newer units, like the Dash 9s and SD90s, are flush mounted
in a dash type control stand. Photo by Neal 3/01

Here's a roof shot... This shows two antennas on an SD38. The
one towards the back is a firecracker style antenna. The one
to the left is a "top hat" style antenna. It's
hard to tell, but the top hat portion might actually be just
the groundplane disc of the original antenna, and the can is
actually an EOT antenna they mounted on the old disc. Photo

This is the control stand inside EJ&E SD38 #670. The box
above the green brake lever, is the Motorola Spectra radio.
The black box that's to the right of the radio, and over the
gauges, is the end of train device receiver. Photo by Neal

This shot shows a couple different types of antennas on the
cab roof of #670. The one towards the back is the firecracker
style antenna. That antenna is used for the voice radio. The
short one to the right is a small can type antenna, which is
used for the end of train device receiver. Photo by Neal

Here's a shot showing the roof of an ex DM&IR SDM. Notice
the small can style EOT antenna in the front center. Behind
that is the firecracker style antenna. Also to the left of center
is what appears to be an old "skate" style antenna.

was sitting outside the old EJ&E Car Shops in Joliet, IL.
You can see the small radio on the upper left. Jim from Oregon
informed me this is a Kenwood TK760-HGK. Photo by Neal

This shot shows the completely rebuilt Engineer's side of the
cab in the lead unit. You can see the Spectra radio has been
mounted flush with the control stand. There's also a receptacle
for a David Clark headset on the front of the control stand
for the Engineer, and a third headset receptacle next to the
handset for passengers. Photo by Neal 6/01
Here's a shot of the conductors side in the same unit. Notice
he has both a handset, and also an receptacle to use a David
Clark headset. Photo by Neal 6/01
This shows the small LCD monitor for a forward facing camera,
that had recently been installed on this SD38-3 upgrade. The
camera is actually mounted next to the upper headlight on the
front of the cab. Photo by Neal 1/01
